Slovenia's Delights

Slovenia's Delights

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana, Slovenia

I will admit, I am a sucker for seafood. From those juicy prawns to the melting battered octopus, seafood can quite literally make me drool. That’s why Slovenia is a melting pot for its fresh, tasty ingredients and I couldn’t wait to tuck in. So, with only two days to explore this beautiful country, the race was on to find that crème de la crème of Slovenian dishes.

Let’s go…

The cobbled high streets of Ljubljana

First up, my nosy senses were drawn to the smell of fresh fish, engulfing Ljubljana’s main high street . Are you a TUNAHOLIC or do you see yourself as a crab lover? Well, Tunaholic is definitely a place to try. Inside this awesome fish bar (as it states on the menu), you will find all kinds of various seafood dishes. From grilled salmon to your, ahem, tuna. I tried the grilled salmon with yellow rice and it felt so light on my stomach. It even filled me up for the next few hours until dinnertime.

My partner ordered the tuna sandwich, which totally blew me away. One bite and the bread melted in my mouth, the smoked tuna hit the back of my throat and those rich flavours were released. Delicious.

Now we move onto the more serious stuff - Dessert! And if you haven’t tried Baklava then nowhere is better than Slovenia to taste its multiflavoured pastries. And wow, do they taste incredible. We visited a dessert cart on the high street and I would recommend anyone to do the same. I went with the chocolate baklava while my partner tried the pistachio. Three words, ‘Oh my god’! I have tried baklava in the past but nothing comes close to this. It is light, crisp and melts delicately on your tongue like smooth ice cream.

The best Baklava I have ever tasted and it comes in chocolate and pistachio flavour. Yum!

Our adventure leads us next onto Ljubljana’s Triple Bridge, which drew our eye towards the many restaurants lining the river, all the way up to the centre square.

I was hooked on the smell of many intense, succulent cuisines, luring me towards a restaurant called Capriccio. You only have to say pizza and I start salivating, especially if the pizza is vegan. However if you are non vegan, there are various varieties of pizza on offer. As you can see below, we give a little inside into how juicy those pizzas truly are. Get ready for that grab!

A trip to Slovenia wouldn’t be complete without a visit to one of its most enchanting spots…. Lake Bled. And with it, comes one of the most vibrant tastes of all desserts. Bled Cake (aka Kremšnita).

If you have a sweet tooth like my partner, then just let this delicate, fluffy pastry entertain your palette. The cream will accompany your tongue with its gentle welcome and you will instantly wonder why you’ve never tried this cake sooner. A true highlight of Slovenia and represents its culture perfectly.

Best Out of Ten

Food taste rating out of 10 (0 being the worst, 10 being the best).

I hope you all enjoyed this article. When visiting a new country, you should always try to expand your horizons and taste as much of the food delicacies as possible. Not only will it open your mind to new foods, it will culturally expand your awareness. Slovenia is a hotbed of many different ingredients and it would be sad for you to miss it.

Until next time
